Hyde's Corner - Book I - No Man's Land is the first installment of a historical novel of epic proportions. Book I - No Man's Land details the story of a family saga only three books can tell. Selmer Burks grows into a man many will call monster, yet, he is a man capable of great love and devotion to family and community. Selmer Burks, youngest son of Silas and Mathilda Burks, sees his family decimated in brutal fashion by Cedric and Jared Hyde. At nineteen, he embarks on a suicidal plot of revenge against those he holds responsible, but before he makes a fatal mistake, a newspaper headline catches his eye. With a cunning beyond his years, he wins election as sheriff of the newly formed Sundowner County. Under color of law, Selmer Burks begins a terrifying campaign of revenge that spans thirty years. His vendetta of hate claims the life of his wife and is responsible for the rape, pregnancy and death in childbirth of his beloved daughter, Laura Lee Burks. Selmer Burks makes arrangements to transport his daughter's body home. But hate has claimed it's pound of flesh and part of his sanity as well. On the drive home, Burks plots the murder of Doctor Herman Beaman, who has accompanied him, as well as the bastard boy he distains as his grandchild.

Hyde Corner Book I No Man Land Hyde Corner Trilogy 1 edition by J B Bergstad Literature Fiction eBooks

It's 1947 and Dr. Herman Beaman awakens to find an old familiar duffle bag that has been left on his doorstep. The stained and worn bag takes Dr. Beaman back almost two decades to a fateful journey he and Selmer Burks took together - a journey that's been etched into the doctor's memory forever.

The bag and what it now contains (namely Tom Burks' journal) becomes the catalyst that takes the reader back to 1877 - the early days of the Burks family, their trek from Tennessee to Texas, their search for a new and better life, and their eventual settle in Oklahoma. The head of the Burks family, Silas, is a proud, honest and fair man who simply wants to stake his claim on a profitable cattle ranch in order to provide for his growing family. As was common during this time, life was difficult, uncertain and often times heartbreaking. Making enemies of the well-to-do, yet unscrupulous Hyde family didn't make things any easier for the struggling Burks family. Through a series of run-ins with the Hydes, the Burks suffer several serious setbacks. Silas's youngest son, Selmer, isn't nearly as forgiving as his father and he has no problem giving the Hyde men what they have coming - even if it means breaking some bones and making even more enemies.

J B Bergstad is a fantastic storyteller. His ability to spin a tale that weaves family determination, justifiable vengeance, and devious cutthroat and lawless activity, together with other factual American history is admirable and riveting. I was hooked from the start and did not want to put this book down until I was finished. I found myself rooting for the Burks family and caring about them all. Although Selmer Burks was often ruthless and even murderous, I fully understood what had brought him to that point. I also found myself hoping the Hyde family would finally be brought to justice. It wasn't difficult to imagine myself in these harsh and early days of the old West and feel what it was like to struggle through life just as the early ranchers did.

One thing is for sure, Hyde's Corner - Book I is just the beginning. Book I leaves us with several questions that readers will want answers to. I would highly recommend this series to anyone interested in the old West, the dynamics of family, revenge and true American grit. I can't wait to read Book II!

Hyde Corner Book I No Man Land Hyde Corner Trilogy 1 edition by J B Bergstad Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A Free book? I was looking for the book to not be good why would they give a book. Away if it was well written? I decided to try it anyway, I had plenty of time. Man was I glad that I did . This was one of the best books that I read in a long . Not going to say any thing about the story other other than. You won't want to put it down. I started reading early one night and got up early the next morning to finish it. Now I have got to wait for the continuing story to come out.. Please, MR Bergstad finish the next continuing book I will be glad to purchase it.
JB Bergstad's 'Hyde's Corner' is the first in an expected trilogy that follows, via flashback, the story of the Burks and the Hydes, two families pitted against each other in mid-nineteenth century America. The patriarchs of each family are set in opposition - Sheriff Selmer Burke and Cedric Hyde. Their tale of hardship and revenge spans three decades of Oklahoma history, and neither man is a hero, in any sense of the word. Nevertheless, the rambling and violent story of their families' tangled lives makes for good, if gritty, western genre fun.
I love how J. B. Bergstad writes in such a descriptive manner. You can feel the chill of a new, October, Oklahoma morning. You can see the sweat pop out on the foreheads of his antagonists as they contemplate their next devious action.

Bergstad pulls the reader into the story a bit at a time, causing you to anticipate what will happen next. Once Beaman starts reading the journal, you'll be hooked.

The story is compelling. The characters are strong. The writing is brilliant. The price is right. Do yourself a favor--start reading NOW.

Don Mosher Author of "Fairwell to Innocence" and "The Old Nitty Gritty of Life."
Wow! Incredible book. The author did an great job with clear descriptions, I could really visualize the places described in the book.

Hyde's Corner is the first book in a trilogy. The book follows closely a small community that is being terrorized by Selmer Burks...a horrific man out to get revenge. The book kinda reminds me off a soap opera...so much drama and confrontation...I loved it!

The book is filled with many intriguing characters, and deviates between people and situations happening around the community.
"Hydes Corner" is a story that will keep you up late into the night, the plot is so intriguing you will not want to put this book down. The story takes place in a newly formed town, maybe early 1900s era. This is the story of Selmer Burks revenge, which spans 30 years in one county. He is protected by the law, and does many horrible things, one resulting in the death of his wife.
I could not put this book down. I can't wait to start the next book. I found myself getting pulled right in, Bergstads writing is very descriptive and the characters are very intriguing. I recommend this book to all.
Wasn't quite sure what to expect from this one but man, was worth the read.

This book starts off in 1947 with Tom Burks, the grandson of Selmer Burks, leaving Hyde's Corner. He's headed for the Army.

Of course we don't know what the hell happened to Tom and why he has to leave. However, we do get the story on his grandfather, Selmer, from a journal Tom leaves for the neighborhood doctor.

And what a story it is. Holy cow.

The journal starts just at the end of the Civil War with Selmers Father, Mother, two brothers and a sister as the principal players. They leave Tennessee for Texas but stop in Oklahoma territory where they decide to make a home. Oklahoma territory is where Selmer is born.

The story carries on right through Oklahomas Statehood, rustlers, Indians, murder, hatred and a big helping of revenge.

Just a great well written solid story.

Five stars and then some.
